Today we will be learning about the country of Kazakhstan, a landlocked nation in Central Asia. Kazakhstan is located along the historic Silk Road, which was used to trade and transport goods from China to Russia and northern Europe. Both Kazakh and Russian people live in Kazakhstan. Many rural Kazakh people still live traditional lives in yurts, which are large tents. The Kazakhs are a Turkic people who speak a language related to Turkish. Kazakhstan gained independence from Russia in 1991. Before that Kazakhstan was ruled by Mongols, Persians and Kazakhstan is very rich in strategic natural resources such as petroleum, natural gas, coal, iron ore, copper, lead, zinc, gold, uranium and more.
