Dear ...........
I'm writing in support of SB 6496 and HB 2810, the bills pertaining to issuing copies of original birth certificates to adult adoptees upon request.
I urge you to vote yes on both of these bills and help bring adoption reform out of the dark ages. Sealing records was an experiment of the post war decades, and this experiment has proven to be grievously inadequate in these enlightened, open, and humane times.
As a resident of Oregon, I'm thrilled to see this excellent bill being considered by my neighboring state. Oregon sealed its records to adult adoptees in l957, Washington in l943. In both cases, it was quite arguably a violation of both states' Constitutional Bill of Rights, which contains a promise to all citizens that no law shall be passed which excludes one group of citizens from the same rights all others possess.
Please consider that SB 6496 and HB 2810 deal with fundamental questions of adult civil rights. I believe that a substantial portion of the national population recognizes this issue as such.
Thank you to the Washington Legislature for considering this important issue. I urge you to vote a resounding "YES".
Thank you,
Helen Hill
