Dear Editor:
Your editorial, "Why Adoption Privacy Must Be Honored" 2/8, misses the point of The Cooke-Kohl legislation, which is about restoring the civil right of adult adoptees at age majority to request and obtain a government document, their original birth certificate, which is, afterall, a document about themselves.
Confidentiality of the adoptees' birth parents is a myth. There is abundant case law to support that adoptees' records can be opened for good cause; furthermore, adoptees' original birth certificates remain public record until the adoption is finalized which takes months, sometimes years; and, adoption procedings are regularly published in both legal and commercial newspapers identifying the parties involved.
Sincerely,
Judy Kennett
